Our first full day was spent with the Olsen family exploring the famous Walmart and building our fears of the infamous Chinese food. Whole livers, chicken feet, intestines, turtles, frogs, pig feet, hearts, silk worms, and other assorted critters laid on display for dinners to come. With the fear of Walmart in our hearts, we found pizza. The city buzzes with excitement where traffic lanes are simply a suggestion. Crossing the street is real life frogger, never knowing when a swerving car is going to come your way. Don’t be alarmed by the excessive horns beeping and cars screeching, it is how they drive here in China. The people we have met so far in China, have opened their hearts to this band of foreigners eagerly taking pictures and showing us the true meaning of hospitality.
Our first week was spent meeting families at CedarNEST, a rehab center for children who have cancer. We were able to do physicals, evaluation of fine and gross motor skills, played with the children and provided training for the staff and parents. At the “Good-bye Party” for the children at CedarNEST, the children performed the song “Jesus Loves Me” with hand motions and all. In the week we spent at CedarNEST, we saw vast improvement in all the children and hope return to the eyes of the parents. It was hard to say good-bye because we all fell in love with the children and the staff at CedarNEST.
We are looking forward to our next adventure at Angel House and Noah Starr Forum School…
