Global Teaching Experience Hangzhou, China – Blog Post #1
Over the past three years, the faculty of the Department of Public Health Sciences Department have traveled to Hangzhou, China to teach course to undergraduate students. This summer, three Master of Public Health (MPH) candidates, Eileen Berrios, Alice Franco, and Javier Munoz, have traveled to China to teach three courses to nearly 80 undergraduate freshman and sophomore students.
We apologize for not reaching out sooner- we have had some busy days preparing for our students at Hangzhou Medical College. Since the moment we arrived we experienced dramatic culture change. As a team we have stuck together and supported each other throughout this journey. We are now in our third week of teaching at Hangzhou Medical College and while teaching the students in their second learned language can be difficult at times, it has been a wonderful experience. Our team arrives every school day together. We meet at 7am and make our journey to the bus stop where the school shuttle picks us up and takes us to the campus. Aside from teaching students, something we have had to adjust to is having lunch at 11:30 every day followed by a time for “rest” when some of the staff take a brief nap. The Hangzhou Medical College staff has been very attentive to our needs and readily assists in any situation that might arise. They have taken the time out their day to give us a tour of the city and to host a formal dinner with the Dean of the college. The weather has been warm and muggy, with rain on and off. We look forward to the second half of our adventure here in China.
