When asked to describe how Freire\u2019s work could impact research, Valerie Kinloch of the University of Pittsburgh stated the following:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><em>\u201c(Freire) encourages us to take a critical perspective, especially when collaborating with other people in community contexts, as we attempt to address pervasive questions about inequality. He also situates research within the reach of the everyday \u2013 the everyday realities, lives, lived conditions, struggles, and hope of people \u2013 to make research accessible to who we are working with and writing with\/about in our research. Thus, research is not singularly about publishing articles and books, but about writing new ways of being into existence that can, fundamentally, change the world for the better.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If universities are to be organized to address the most pressing social, economic, and political inequities,<sup>5<\/sup> it would take direction for its research agenda from the needs identified by marginalized and oppressed communities.<em>&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freire\u2019s critical pedagogy was influential in developing participatory research models such as participatory action research (PAR). Relationships and power are examined once again, this time in the context of research. Freire\u2019s concept of praxis, (that knowledge is developed through a cycle of action and reflection) is essential to PAR\u2019s methodological approach that engages researchers and community members in dialogue (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.springerpub.com\/interpersonal-social-work-skills-for-community-practice-9780826108111.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.springerpub.com\/interpersonal-social-work-skills-for-community-practice-9780826108111.html\">Hardina, 2012<\/a>).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participatory approaches to doing research have gained critical attention across the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/social-sciences\/behavioural-sciences\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">behavioral and social sciences<\/a>, as scholars, activists, and practitioners committed to social action work closely with communities to identify their concerns and develop plans for transformative change (Torre and Fox, 2015).&nbsp; It is research that translates knowledge into action.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.calbaptist.edu\/cshb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2022\/05\/kaleidico-3V8xo5Gbusk-unsplash-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.calbaptist.edu\/cshb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2022\/05\/kaleidico-3V8xo5Gbusk-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.calbaptist.edu\/cshb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2022\/05\/kaleidico-3V8xo5Gbusk-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.calbaptist.edu\/cshb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2022\/05\/kaleidico-3V8xo5Gbusk-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.calbaptist.edu\/cshb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2022\/05\/kaleidico-3V8xo5Gbusk-unsplash-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.calbaptist.edu\/cshb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2022\/05\/kaleidico-3V8xo5Gbusk-unsplash-2048x1366.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blogs.calbaptist.edu\/cshb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2022\/05\/kaleidico-3V8xo5Gbusk-unsplash-880x587.jpg 880w, https:\/\/blogs.calbaptist.edu\/cshb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2022\/05\/kaleidico-3V8xo5Gbusk-unsplash-830x553.jpg 830w, https:\/\/blogs.calbaptist.edu\/cshb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2022\/05\/kaleidico-3V8xo5Gbusk-unsplash-1440x960.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/blogs.calbaptist.edu\/cshb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2022\/05\/kaleidico-3V8xo5Gbusk-unsplash-820x547.jpg 820w, https:\/\/blogs.calbaptist.edu\/cshb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2022\/05\/kaleidico-3V8xo5Gbusk-unsplash-670x447.jpg 670w, https:\/\/blogs.calbaptist.edu\/cshb\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2022\/05\/kaleidico-3V8xo5Gbusk-unsplash-320x213.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@kaleidico?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText\">Kaleidico<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/s\/photos\/research?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText\">Unsplash<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The values orientation of participatory research, such as PAR and community-based participatory research, challenges the hierarchical and extractive approaches of traditional research through its core beliefs that:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Knowledge is not a product of academia, but a result of engagement with the community<sup>6<\/sup>&nbsp;<\/li><li>Community participation is critical in every phase of the research process.<sup>7<\/sup>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Decision-making should be done by those most affected by the outcomes of the decision.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Development of structures, processes and social networks within the community to meet their own needs empowers members towards self-determination and exercising power over their own lives.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Building and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships between academia and community&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our recurrent theme emerges once again:&nbsp; An essential part of being fully human is exercising our God-given capacity to create, make, and build. We do this in partnership with our Creator and in collaboration with others. If that is true, then we must choose between courage or comfort.&nbsp; As Christian scholars, we have (or should have) an insurrectional faith and worship a King that does not stay in ivory towers (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Philippians%202%3A6-7&amp;version=NIV\">Philippians 2:6-7<\/a>). How we teach and pursue knowledge are consequential and fundamental matters especially in our fragmented times. The great objective is that we can recapture what it means to be truly human &#8211; inextricably connected mutually interdependent, and creative beings. This is how we were designed. Once we realize this, we can know in our hearts that we truly belong to our Creator <em>and<\/em>\u202fone another so we can courageously get on with our three-point agenda spelled out in Micah 6:8 \u2013 <em>\u201cto act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reflect and Discuss:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>What values orientation drives your research practices and approach? Are there any parts that you feel need to be re-examined?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\"><li>How insurrectional is your Christian faith? In what areas (especially teaching, scholarship, and service) do need to challenge the status quo or business as usual? What kind of relational and institutional supports could help you meet those challenges?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>________________________<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>6<\/sup> The relationship between the university research center and the community is re-examined by Jenny Onyxher in 2008 article entitled &#8220;<em>University-Community Engagement: What does it mean?<\/em>\u201d published in the International Journal of Community Research and Engagement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>7<\/sup>The slogan \u201c<em>Nothing about us without us<\/em>\u201d asserts that no policy should be created without the full and direct participation of those it affects.
