{"id":146,"date":"2013-08-30T19:34:46","date_gmt":"2013-08-30T19:34:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.calbaptist.edu\/challenge\/?page_id=146"},"modified":"2019-08-21T14:49:40","modified_gmt":"2019-08-21T14:49:40","slug":"passage","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.calbaptist.edu\/challenge\/our-process\/tribeoverview\/passage\/","title":{"rendered":"Passage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">PASSAGE<strong> (30-40 minutes)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The goal of the passage is to direct people to find answers in God\u2019s word in the midst of community. Notice we said, \u201cfind answers in God\u2019s word.\u201d We want\u00a0them to look in the context of the Bible, not to be spoon fed by an \u201call-knowing\u201d leader.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Give a man a fish and he\u2019ll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Don\u2019t just give answers, give people the tools to find them in the Bible so they can find answers the rest of their lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">We want people to focus on six questions. These are crucial to helping people find truth in the Bible by themselves. Don\u2019t feel the need (or liberty) to develop amazing, thought-provoking questions that are really long statements that show your knowledge. That simply isn\u2019t reproducible and while it may benefit your group for one night, it won\u2019t develop critical thinking skills in your group. Simply have the person leading the session ask these questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>\u201cThe passage for this week is ____________________. Everyone turn or scroll there and I\u2019ll start reading the passage after everyone\u2019s found it. (You read the passage by yourself all the way through.) Now get in a group of 3-6 people around you. I\u2019ll read the first question and you\u2019ll have some time to respond to it in your small group. After a few minutes, I\u2019ll move on to the next questions until we all come back together as a large group to discuss. Sound good? Go.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>\u00a0What is this passage about?<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>\u00a0What does this passage say about God?<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>\u00a0What does this passage say about people?<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>\u00a0How do I obey this?<\/em><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>Making a specific goal will help us think about what we\u2019ve read and how we can obey it. Hey, one way to remember that is to use the acronym <strong>S.M.A.R.T<\/strong>. <strong>SMART<\/strong> goals are goals that are Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. Let\u2019s set a goal that we can do before we met again next week.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>Who will I share this passage with and invite to Tribe next week?<\/em><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>We always want to be inclusive and thinking of ways to include others in Tribe. Because of that, who can you invite?\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">After all the groups have had time to answer the last question, call them all back together as a large group. Take the time to ask:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong><em>\u201cNow that we\u2019re all back together again, who would like to share <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>something from their group discussion about what this passage is about? (Give time <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>for 1-2 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">quick<\/span> responses.) And what does this passage say about God and His <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>global purpose? (Ask for 1-2 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">quick<\/span>\u00a0responses. Continue in this way until you\u2019ve <\/em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">briefly<\/span> <em>walked through all the questions.)\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Helpful Tips for Passage:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0Always split into at least three groups. Never two. If you just have two groups you will always overhear the single voice of the other group when yours is silent. With three groups the two other groups drown out each other. Two groups in the same room will always be awkward. Always.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">The group must stay true to the Bible. If something questionable is said during discussion, a great question (to ask with much grace) is \u201cWhere do you see that in the text?\u201d Your job is to direct people back to God\u2019s word. Train your group to ask each other that question.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0Give some time at the end to walk through the questions as a large group and give people the opportunity to share practical next steps.
